I canned peaches today.

I did it! I actually canned something successfully! (Well, at least they made that little pop sound!) It took me all day to figure it out, buy the cans, prep the peaches, and actually can them. I'm sure it would have been cheaper to just buy some canned peaches, but then what would I blog about?

Dave is convinced that we are in for a major economic depression and so we need to up our food storage. So inbetween canning I re-read lots of the literature I've collected at all those Enrichments on Food Storage. I even tried out a recipe for chicken alfredo using dry milk, etc. It was DISGUSTING. I threw it out, and opened a can of spaghetti sauce and we had chicken parmesan instead! :) I guess that is how you learn -- try out recipes and see which ones work.

Fortunately I was able to have this somewhat productive day because Teya is into that cute stage where she plays make believe with her friends (normally characters from a movie or tv show) and sets up tea parties for them, makes beds for them, etc. I caught her talking to her friends all day long. She was having a blast.
Now, I price-matched roast and chicken at WalMart today. Am I brave enough to can it? Only time will tell!

that's awesome Jennie! go for the canned meat, it's great. There are a few secrets to making it not taste like canned meat, when you cook with it. I love the canned roast in tacos, and the chicken possibilities are limitless!

Yipee! I am SO glad that it turned out! You are way more patient than I am, doing the shopping for food, meat and canning all in one day, you must be TOTALLY exhausted!

I am so impressed. I have been getting the same feeling your husband has and think I really need to do better to prepare my food situation. I tried pickles and tomatoes in June. I may try peaches next. I hope I hear that same pop.

Go Jennie. I just bought 2 flats of strawberries today. Freezer jam, here I come! I also have a date set for the cannery - chicken chunks! Yeah. It's my first time to ever go there. We'll see how it goes.

Hey it's Brooke! I am so proud of you for canning the peaches. When you left my yard sale, I thought to myself that I would rather come with you than do what I was doing. Do the meat! I have and it works. It looks like little aliens in the jars but tastes good!

Good on ya! I have a few things that I do each year. My rule is that I have to be able to borrow the proper equipment from my neightors and it can't be too labor intensive. That means we'll have apple sauce, dried apples, and strawberry freezer jam to survive on some day. Enjoy the peaches!

Good job Jennie! Sometimes it does seem easier and maybe even cheaper to just buy them at the store, but you feel so good afterwards having accomplished something. My only problem is I don't want to open them to eat them later because it was so much work. Canned meat it supposed to be good. I want to try chicken.
