Ducttape Dessert

Yes, you read that title right! So, here is the fun story behind it. We hosted Christmas Eve at our house this year, so I wanted to make a special dessert. One of my favorites growing up was this peppermint dessert that was Oh so yummy and Oh so Christmassy!
I thought I remembered how to make it, and the kids were very excited to help me. Here is Teya crushing all the graham crackers.
Here is Eden taking her turn stirring the softened peppermint ice cream mixed with cool whip and mini marshmellows.
Then, the task to figure out how to put it all together. I remember it being a 'roll' type of desert. We put wax paper on the cookie sheet, then spread the crushed graham crackers. Then... we got creative. We put another layer of wax paper over the graham crackers and spread out the peppermint portion. Then, Eden helped me pick up that layer and flip it over so it was up against the crackers. We peeled back the wax paper and now had the task of rolling up ice cream that was really soft. It proved to be quite messy. And, it wasn't staying in a nice roll. Josh had the solution. He ran and got ducttape! It solves anything! So, while the kids held the mess of a roll, I put ducktape around the layers of wax paper to try to keep the ice cream and graham crackers all together. We then froze it until the party. Here is the final product.
It sure didn't look that great, but it was a hit! Everyone LOVED it. I even warmed up hot fudge and after slicing it into pieces, drizzled it with chocolate. Yummy! So, I might never win an award for most appetizing dessert, but it sure tasted great!
As a post note, I was talking to my mom on Christmas day trying to figure out what I had done wrong, and in the course of our conversation I realized I was mixing up memories. There was an entirely different dessert that was a roll. The peppermint dessert was served just as a sheet cake type of dessert, cut into squares! No wonder! Oh well, it was a fun Christmas memory!

Jennie,
I've never even tried making that famous desert (call me lazy) but I do remember enjoying it. Isn't ducktape amazing? You can find a new use for it every day.

That's awesome! Joshua should get an award! And yet, another great use for duck tape.

That recipe sounds really good, by the way. And I'll bet it tasted better rolled up anyway.

You should add that to a "creative uses of duct tape" website. Way to save the day Josh!

That is so funny. At our ward Christmas Party, Sheila Olsen was sitting by me and reminiscing about the famous "peppermint dessert" that our mom used to make. After describing it she said, "I don't think there is even ONE redeeming calorie in that stuff"! "But it is sure delicious" I replied!. The chocolate on top sounds wonderful.

Way to go Blasers! Sounds like you had fun being extra creative! If you check out page 175 in the Groberg Family Cook Book you may get an idea how truly creative you were. The original recipe for the "famous family favorite" (originated from my Aunt Deon) has quite a different list of ingredients than what you mentioned using, but yours sounds delicious too.
Thanks for including the pictures!

For your interested Bloggers here is the original recipe:

FROZEN PEPPERMINT DESSERT
Make a cookie crumb crust by mashing Vanilla or Chocolate wafers until you have fine crumbs. Mix in a little softened butter until the crumbs begin to stick together. Line a dripper cake pan (or plastic container if you want) with waxed paper. Press in the crumb mixture to form a bottom crust. Save some crumbs for the top.

40 large marshmallows, cut with scissors into smaller pieces, or use an equivalent amount of mini ones.

Break up peppermint candy canes and crush them in a blender until quite fine. You will need 3/4 cup of the 'powdered' candy canes.

Beat 3 cups of whipping cream until it holds its shape.

Fold the crushed peppermint candy and the marshmallows into the whipped cream. Scoop the mixture onto the crust and gently spread it out. Sprinkle the extra cookie crumbs on the top. Cover and freeze until hard.

To serve: remove from freezer a few minutes before serving. Cut into pieces (not too large as it is quite rich) Top with whatever you want: a dob of whipped cream with a cherry on top, or drizzle chocolate, etc. Enjoy!

Hey Jennie! I just saw that you visited my blog. I'm glad to hear from you. I'm better to keep in touch this way. I just started to FaceBook thing too, which helps me waste even more time on the computer. I've found lots of people. Anyway the song cracks me up. I've been forced to play it on several occasions when people find out (from Corey) that I recorded a song once. They always think its funny. Maybe we can still make a fortune if we spread it around little by little. BTW I would want at least 30%, afterall we all know that it was really a song about me.:) Anyway you look great and the family is so cute! Let's keep in touch.
